Many-splendored Machiasport

The Downeast Sunrise Trail stretches luxuriously through through the wetlands of Machiasport.

Deep in the woods, a three-story yurt stands as a living memory of the vision of Bill Coperthwaite, an apostle of simple living and “A Handmade Life”. Better hikers would find the way an easy one. We, alas, doubted our directions and turned back as the sun started to drop behind the treeline.

Crescent shaped and otherworldly, Jasper Beach is one of only two beaches in the world composed entirely of stone. Some visitors hear the stones sing as they are washed by the tides.

Sunset transforms Long Point Preserve into an autumnal dreamscape. The long grass catches the light like a flame, or Rumpelstiltskin’s thread. Elegant and ghostly, the white birch trees reach for the sky.

It feels a gift to see Machias Bay adorned in rose-gold.
