Sunrise at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

The town of Lubec is the easternmost point in the continental United States. It boasts the first light of the continental coastline (although other communities contest this claim).

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is as special a place as any to watch for the dawn.

The park at sunrise is solitudinous but not lonely. A hostel on park premises is a popular stay for vacationing families and other itinerants. Children huddle under blankets and bleary-eyed parents clutch coffee mugs in quiet contemplation. Photographers perch atop the craggy rocks below. Lobster boats skim between the shoals and along the horizon line – sunrise is no unfamiliar event to lobsterers, after all.

As the sun rises higher in the sky, the contrast of the red and white paint grows more striking.
