An afternoon hike at Western Head Preserve

If you asked me to describe a perfect afternoon hike, I would describe it thus:

A lush and varied trail through towering evergreens and over plush moss. Planks reinforced with honeycomb wire, both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The company of that most indignant and amusing of woodland creatures, the red squirrel.

The intoxicating blend of spruce and salt air. Sharp turns towards the water and surprise beach crossings. A rope to rappel into a secluded cove, and staircase made of roots!

At the trail’s end, a picnic spot with an expansive view. And a glimpse of Little River Lighthouse, one of the dearest of them all.

For the walk back, the companionable thrum of marine diesel engines, the lobster boats returning to harbor. A welcoming committee of grey-shingled houses, warm in the evening glow.

Can’t you just see it? What could be more perfect?
